Are you participating in Movember, to raise awareness of Men's Health Issues?

MOVEMBER

With men growing out their moustaches this month to raise awareness and support for men’s health issues including prostate cancer and mental health, our Exercise Physiologist Emily Cousins has listed a few ways that keeping active can help men stay healthy!

  1. Exercise may reduce the risk of prostate cancer, particularly reducing the risk of advanced disease and in older men. So no matter your age, it is important to keep leading an active lifestyle!
  2. Exercise can help minimise side effects of prostate cancer treatment including reduced bone density (osteoporosis), reduced muscle mass and fatigue. Continuing to exercise after being diagnosed with prostate cancer is important – consult with your doctor and an exercise physiologist what the right type and amount is for you.
  3. Exercise can improve survival rates by 50% in men with prostate cancer. The best effects were in men who did 3 or more hours a week of vigorous exercise.
  4. Regular aerobic exercise can help reduce episodes of depression and may be just as effective as medication or psychological treatments in some men.

Interested in knowing more about what exercise you should do to or do you have a family member that you think would benefit from knowing more? Consult your doctor and make an appointment with one of our Exercise Physiologists who will prescribe a tailored exercise program to help you achieve optimal health. (Referrals are not required but some patients with a chronic condition may be eligible for limited Medicare funding).
