Nutrition for Adolescent Health - Injury Prevention

Calcium & Vitamin D play a crucial role in developing and maintaining bone strength and density. Did you know calcium is lost via sweat? Calcium also assists with neuromuscular contractions and helps your heart beat!

Calcium recommendations are highest for growing adolescents (12-18), post-menopausal women and the elderly (70+).

During adolescents, if you are not achieving adequate calcium intake where peak bone mass accrual is at it's all time highest, you are at greater risk of stress or fracture injuries and osteopenia or osteoporosis in the future.

An excellent brand to assist meeting your calcium requirements is Rokeby Farms, with approximately double the calcium content as compared to other dairy brands. It also makes for a perfect post-training recovery snack due to its valuable protein content per serve.

If you're unsure how much calcium you need, or where else you can find calcium in foods, come & chat with Jess our Clinical and Sports Dietitian.
