“Self-care” is abuzz word we hearing the media all the time. Although you may switch off when you hear these types of words occasionally it is worthwhile to take the time and think about what they really mean……

5 Simple Tips for self-care:

1. Get Active and Stay Active

Any physical activity is better than none. Moving everyday is beneficial to keep joints supple and muscles strong. Simple stretching and walking can assist everyone and can provide the starting point when you haven’t moved for a while.

2. Listen to your body and pace yourself

Understanding your body when it is telling you something is important. Pain is the way our body tells us to slow down, so listening to our body can help us avoid injury. Reducing the intensity of a task, and taking breaks are all the simple ways to allow out body to get back to recover and rejuvenate.

3. Get enough sleep and rest

Just like pushing through pain, staying awake or pushing through fatigue can also be detrimental to your health. Ensuring you have rest and down time allows your body to be ready for the next day feeling fresh and energised.

4. Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise is critical for both physical and mental health. So often we think we don’t have time to exercise, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple walking, running, riding or playing with kids or friends will be exercise enough for some. It is a great too for stress relief as our bodies releases “happy hormones” (endorphins) when we exercise.

5. Breath, relax, don’t stress

Easier said than done, we know! Research continually show the effects of stress on the body and mind. Taking time out to breath, focus on something else for a short period of time can be enough to calm yourself and in turn reduce blood pressure, heart rate, and feelings of anxiety.
