Looking after yourself is so important, and it can be tough to know where to start. Here are some tips to get you started on your selfcare journey!

In today’s crazy world, it is easy to forget that you are an individual that needs to be looked after. “Self-care” is a buzzword we are hearing in the media all the time. Although you may switch off when you hear these types of words, occasionally it is worthwhile to take the time and think about what they really mean……

Symmetry Physiotherapy always takes a holistic approach when it comes to patient care. This means looking at all aspects of you and your life and working with you to get the best outcomes.

Simple Tips for selfcare:

  1. Get Active and Stay Active and keep it regular

Any physical activity is better than none. Moving every day is beneficial to keep joints supple and muscles strong. Simple stretching and walking can assist everyone and can provide the starting point when you have not moved for a while.

Regular exercise is critical for both physical and mental health. So often we think we do not have time to exercise, but it does not have to be complicated. Simple walking, running, riding, or playing with kids or friends will be exercise enough for some. It is also great for stress relief as our bodies release “happy hormones” (endorphins) when we exercise.

  1. Listen to your body and pace yourself

Understanding your body when it is telling you something is important. Pain is the way our body tells us to slow down, so listening to your body can help you avoid injury. Reducing the intensity of a task and taking breaks are all the simple ways to allow our body to get back to recover and rejuvenate.

  1. Get enough sleep and rest

Just like pushing through pain, staying awake or pushing through fatigue can also be detrimental to your health. Ensuring you have rest and down time allows your body to be ready for the next day, feeling fresh and energised.

  1. Breath, relax, reduce stress

Easier said than done, we know! Research continually shows the effects of stress on the body and mind. Taking time out to breathe, focus on something else for a short period of time can be enough to calm yourself and reduce blood pressure, heart rate, and feelings of anxiety. If you struggle to switch off, there are plenty of apps and programs that can support and guide you through this.

  1. Drink plenty of water

Water cleanses your muscles of lactic acid and other metabolic wastes. Hydration helps reduce inflammation and pain. Drinking enough water keeps your blood circulating allowing for removal of toxins and movement of healing cells to any injury’s sites across your body.

Taking care of yourself should be a priority, and we hope that these tips for selfcare have given you a good starting point.
